Sand Castings
Sand casting is one of the most common casting process. The process is characterized by it’s need for draft and can accommodate undercuts in a cast design. Although the undercuts require additional tooling and increases part price due to the use of a secondary piece in the mold called a core.
Sand casting can be found in virtually every country in the world. The process varies from heavily automated molding and pouring operations that are designed for high volume production to manual, hand packed molds for lower volume production.
Common materials poured are various gray and ductile irons. Although sand molds are used to cast steel and aluminum parts as well. Take a look the materials and process charts, these will help to determine the proper process and material for your specific application.
