Sand Casting
Sand casting is one of the most common casting processes. The process is characterized by it’s need for draft and can accommodate undercuts in a cast design. (Castings with undercuts cost more due to additional tooling and the use of a secondary piece in the mold called a "Core".)
Sand casting can be found in virtually every country in the world. The process varies from heavily automated molding and pouring operations that are designed for high volume production, to manual hand-packed molds for lower volume production.
Common materials poured are various gray and ductile irons. Sand molds are used to cast steel and aluminum parts as well. Take a look at the materials chart to help determine the proper material for your specific application.
